In my last message, which was already quite long, I forgot to include something that is very important for you to know about me.
One of the ways I’m building equity into my business now is by no longer assuming that white people (like me) are the default. For anything. Because we’re not, and I do know that - I truly hit the send button before I included this in my message.
Here’s what I forgot to include:
I’m a white, middle-class, married cis-het woman in the United States, and so I realize I won’t be the right coach for everybody. Maybe Probably, you’ve had bad experiences with people who share some of my identities. If this means I can’t be the right coach for you, I accept that with grace and love, and I believe you.
And, I want you to know that I do coach people of the Global Majority (meaning, BIPOC, which is what we typically say in the U.S.), as well as LGBTQIA+ folks. About half of my clients have different identities than me, actually.
So what happens with my clients when I occasionally act like a bossy, know-it-all white woman; when I slip into old patterns of doing harm to people who don’t share my privilege? I tell my clients upfront, in our very first session, that they have my full permission and blessing to call me out on it my BS. And they do! And it’s an amazing gift to me, to my work, and to all my future clients.
If you’d like to talk to me about coaching but my identity concerns you for any reason, please consider reaching out to me anyway to talk about your concerns. I’m never going to dismiss what you’re feeling and I won’t try to talk you into hiring me anyway.
